Choosing a Topic

When choosing a topic for your research, it can help to do some brainstorming and/or read general background information seeking first.

To brainstorm, think of topics in the field of business or the economy that may interest you. Try and think of current issues that have caught your interest or an aspect of class that you wanting to learn more about. Write down any keywords you think of. Choose a topic that you will be able to understand and that you believe you can find adequate sources about. 

To read some general background information about your topic, you can use the following databases which contain essays and reports summarizing the issues related to a specific topic. You can also look at current topics in the news or review some of the internet and industry resources listed on other pages in this guide to get ideas about current topics in the industry. 

Searching for Sources

This guide contains links to resources you can use to search for sources for your research assignment.

Not sure how to search the library's databases? View the information below, or view a video on searching Academic Search Complete, which has a similar interface to many of the library's other databases. 

Once you have performed your search, use the options on the left-hand side menu to limit your results.

When you select an article, you will see this detailed record interface where you can download or view the article, as well as save and cite it. 

Searching the Library Catalog

You can also search the library catalog, iShare, for books, eBooks, and articles. Not sure how to search the library's catalog? View the information below, or view videos on searching, which has a similar interface to many of the library's other databases. 

Use keywords to search for your topic. The default search will search all items available through HCC.

Once you have performed your search, use the options on the left-hand side menu to limit your results.

Click an item you are interested in to access it and see more information. Scroll down to see the options for availability.

Physical books are located in the library and can be found shelved by their call number. 

eBooks and articles can be accessed by clicking the link(s) under View Online. eBooks often open and download in different formats, but you can also generally search their contents and view just single chapters, if desired.
