Citation Styles

What is a citation? 

A citation provides information to reference a published or unpublished work.  Using a citation in your research paper lets the reader know that you used information from outside sources in your work. The citation provides information such as the author’s name, publication date, journal title, article title, and page numbers.

There are many different types of citation styles! The most popular are APA and MLA styles, but there are many others. 

Here are examples of APA and MLA citations for the same article:

APA

Fourney, S., & Brown, T. (2018). More than a game: Fulfilling expectations and inscriptions in the career of LeBron James. Western Journal of Black Studies, 42(3/4), 97–112.

MLA 

Fourney, Sean, and Timothy Brown. “More than a Game: Fulfilling Expectations and Inscriptions in the Career of LeBron James.” Western Journal of Black Studies, vol. 42, no. 3/4, Fall/Winter2018 2018, pp. 97–112.
